Durham City YFC ploughing match
2:49pm Friday 5th March 2010

Durham City YFC ploughing match.
The third annual contest held by Durham City YFC takes place in a 30-acre field which was home to the Durham Maize Maze at Witton Hall Farm, Witton Gilbert, on Sunday, March 14.
Co-ordinator Johnny Stables said last year’s event attracted more than 50 entries with another seven joining in on the day.
He said: “Interest is going from strength to strength and not just among the ploughing people.”
There are four classes – vintage trailed, vintage and classic mounted, YFC conventional and YFC reversible – with prize money for the first three and rosettes for the first four in each section.
Chris Holmes, host farmer from J H Holmes & Sons, said they enjoy hosting the match.
He said: “We would normally have ploughed the field by now but have held back for the competition, we like to support the young farmers.”
The match, which starts at 9.30am, is free with donations going to charity. The field lies beside the Witton Gilbert roundabout on the A691 Durham to Consett Road.
